Facebook, Intel, and AMD bring more resources to Open Compute Project

zdnet-ocp-summit

The push for open hardware is getting stronger as the Open Compute Project has signed on a number of new commitments and projects from some of Silicon Valley's biggest companies.

Announced amid the first day of the fourth Open Compute Summit in Santa Clara, Calif. on Wednesday, the motivation behind these initiatives is to promote open hardware (specifically data centers and servers) in the same way that open software is promoted.

As big data continues to be a hot topic that doesn't stop growing and still can't be entirely defined, the need for new and fresh hardware designs is imperative.

Here are a few examples of what has already been revealed in less than 90 minutes this morning.

Fresh off its Graph Search announcement on Tuesday, Facebook (also the original official member of the OCP) has contributed to what can be lightly referred to as the "group hug" board.

In more technical terms, engineers from the world's largest social network are contributing a new common slot architecture specification for motherboards, which should turn around and produce vendor-neutral boards that can accommodate up to 10 System-on-Chip circuits.

Those SOCs will be supported by Intel, AMD, Calxeda, and Applied Micro -- the last of which has already built a mechanical demo of the new design.

Intel is also contributing designs from its forthcoming silicon photonics technology, which are intended to enable 100Gbps interconnects -- or enough to last for "multiple processor generations." More pointedly, the photonics technology is supposed to have "such low latency" that the same components previously needed to be bound to the same motherboard can be spread out within a rack.

The OCP has also grown considerably from its founding days a little under two years ago when only Facebook was onboard. Some of the new members for the non-profit community now includes more enterprise-familiar heavyweights such as EMC, Sandisk, and Fusion-io, among many others.

Frank Frankovsky, one of the leaders of the Open Compute Project, added in a blog post that "these announcements will enable data center operators to build systems that better fit the workloads they need to run" as well as "unlock even more efficiencies in data center construction and operations."

Why Walmart's Straight Talk unlimited iPhone 5 plan may not be such a good deal

Earlier this month, Walmart announced that the iPhone 5 would be available on its Straight Talk Wireless service. While the promise of US$45 monthly unlimited data, text, and voice service sounds wonderful, TechNewsDaily is reporting that the plan has restrictions.

Once you've used 2 GB of your "unlimited" data plan, your throughput is throttled so downloads will be quite slow. As we mentioned in our previous post, an unlocked iPhone 5 is available from Walmart in a 16 GB version for $649. So, the phone comes with a higher initial cost than a locked iPhone 5 available from other US carriers and the unlimited plan really isn't unless you're fine with dial-up speeds.

If, on the other hand, you rarely use more than 2 GB of data and use your phone primarily for voice and texting, then the Straight Talk plan might be worth your while. The $450 more you'll pay up front for the phone does give you an unlocked phone, and in many cases would be recovered within about 8 months on Walmart's plan.

Buyers of iPhones and iPads should always do the math when considering the ins and outs of discounted cellular packages.

Senate to start hearings on gun plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday he'll begin hearings in two weeks on gun control proposals.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said he doesn't know if an assault weapons ban can pass the Senate but he said there are some measures that can, such as improved background checks.

"There are some who say nothing will pass. I disagree with that," Leahy told students at Georgetown University Law Center. "What I'm interested in is what we can get."

Leahy spoke as President Barack Obama prepared to unveil sweeping proposals to curb gun violence a month after the slaughter in Newtown, Conn., of 20 young students and six adults. Obama is proposing reinstating a ban on assault weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, tightening background checks, and cracking down on gun trafficking, among other steps.

Leahy said his committee would consider Obama's proposals but he declined to commit to any timetable for voting on a bill.

Leahy, a gun owner, said he envisions a series of hearings examining violence in popular media and how to keep guns safe, among other topics.

His plan could point to a slower process in Congress than gun control advocates would like. The White House sees a need for fast action before memories of Newtown fade. Leahy disputed any suggestion that his approach would stand in the way of quick movement.

"I think it is an urgent situation and that's why the first hearings held by anybody, House or Senate, is going to be by me," he said.

Leahy said he thought Congress could act to close the "gun show loophole" that allows sales by private sellers at gun shows and elsewhere ? including over the Internet ? to proceed without background checks. Advocates say some 40 percent or more of gun sales are completed in that fashion.

But Leahy said "I don't know" when asked whether a new assault weapons ban could pass the Senate.

Jaguar pushes all-wheel-drive technology via Wall Street Journal ...

Jaguar Web site shows off its all wheel drive technology

Jaguar North America is pushing its Instinctive All Wheel Drive technology that is available for the XJ and XF models via?interactive video advertisements on The Wall Street Journal?s Web site homepage.

The video that popped out of the ad placed on the Wall Street Journal side bar Jan. 14 showed off Jaguar?s all wheel drive ability. A click-through on the ad led to a page on Jaguar?s Web site about the specific vehicle models.

?Video in banner creative allows consumers to engage within the Web site where they encounter the ad,? said Joseph Torpey, communications manager at Jaguar Land Rover North America,?Mahwah, NJ.

?A rich media ad with video is more effective in generating awareness and consideration,? he said.

?Also, we are able to make a stronger impact among our target when we reach consumers across multiple channel, particularly digital and TV.?

All wheel advertising
The ads placed by Jaguar are part of the larger Instinctive All Wheel Drive campaign.

The ads serve as a platform to introduce consumers to the technology and an invitation to learn more about the new XF and XJ models.

Wall Street Journal homepage

Consumers are given a call to action through the ad that reads ?expand for video.?

When a consumer clicks on the ad, a video starts playing to show off the new Jaguar models.

Jaguar video in ad

Once the video is over, consumers are invited to learn more about the models through the tabs on the side of the ad.

Consumers can view the image gallery, watch more videos, sign up for the e-newsletter and visit Jaguar?s Web site and social media all without leaving the original Wall Street Journal page.

Additional options on ad

Jaguar seems to be looking to reach business-minded affluent readers of the Wall Street Journal online with this ad placement, which is an appropriate audience for the brand.

?The publication?s readership is an affluent, educated target audience rip for luxury automotive brand marketing messaging,? said Scott Forshay, Austin, TX- based luxury digital marketing consultant.

?Adhering to the age-old adage of right audience, right message, right time, the brand has made an appropriate decision in terms of reaching a desired audience both potentially interested in, and capable of purchasing, a luxury automobile,? he said.

?As readership continues its shift toward digital editions of publications, the brand is right to take advantage of the enhanced digital display capabilities to not only increase exposure, but to tell a more holistic story through the rich media content.?

Standing out
Video advertisements like the ones that Jaguar placed on the WSJ homepage, allow consumers to learn more about a brand or a product than just a typical banner advertisement.

These also allow the consumer to experience the advertisement while still remaining on the original Web site they were on.

Other luxury brands have taken advantage of interactive digital ads to entice affluent consumers as well.

For instance, U.S. lifestyle label Ralph Lauren showed off its holiday 2012 collection through attention-grabbing header, banner and side bar advertisements on the New York Times Web site.

The ads featured select 2012 Ralph Lauren holiday items in a video and image gallery. A click-through on the banner ad takes users to the Ralph Lauren Holiday 2012 Web site to see the collection or locate a store (see story).

?Video add placements are a great way for brands to stand out, especially when the ad?s content is relevant in creating a more meaningful engagement with the brand or product,? said Rachel Lewis,?senior strategist at?iProspect, Fort Worth, TX.

?In this case, Jaguar uses the unit to also give consumers a better feel for the car, the driving experience and the new Instinctive All Wheel Drive feature,? she said.

?This ad does far more to connect the consumer with the product that a standard banner ad.?

Final take

Boeing 787 jets in Japan grounded after problems

by Associated Press

Updated yesterday at 10:34 PM

TOKYO - Japan's transport ministry says Boeing 787 planes are being grounded for safety checks in the latest blow for the new passenger jet.

One of the 787s operated by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing Wednesday in western Japan after a cockpit message showed battery problems -- the latest in a series of problems including a battery fire and fuel leaks. No one has been seriously injured.

The ministry said Wednesday it got notices from ANA, which operates 17 of the jets, and Japan Airlines which has seven, that all their 787 aircraft will not be flying.

The grounding was being done voluntarily by the airlines. But the ministry says it's categorizing the problem Wednesday as a "serious incident" that could have led to an accident.?

ANA spokesman Takuya Taniguchi said the airline was not yet prepared to comment on the general problems that have surfaced in the 787. He could provide no further details on Wednesday's incident, though local media reported that smoke was seen inside the aircraft.

A Japan Airlines spokesman said they have decided to cancel all five of their scheduled 787 flights today.

"We will decide what to do after today based on what ANA finds out about the cause of the problem with their aircraft," said Seiji Takaramoto.

The U.S. government is conducting a review to find out what caused a fire, a fuel leak and other worrisome incidents with Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced airliner, though it has reassured the public it is safe to fly.

Japanese airlines have been the first to roll out the 787.

Boeing has said that various technical problems are to be expected in the early days of any aircraft model.

"Boeing is aware of the diversion of a 787 operated by ANA to Takamatsu in western Japan. We will be working with our customer and the appropriate regulatory agencies," Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said.

A fire ignited Jan. 7 in the battery pack of an auxiliary power unit of a Japan Airlines 787 empty of passengers as the plane sat on the tarmac at Boston's Logan International Airport. It took firefighters 40 minutes to put out the blaze. Later last week, a fuel leak delayed a flight from Boston to Tokyo of another Japan Airlines 787.

ANA cancelled a domestic flight to Tokyo on Jan. 9 after a computer wrongly indicated there was a problem with the Boeing 787's brakes.? Two days later, the carrier reported two new cases of problems with the aircraft, a minor fuel leak and a cracked windscreen in a 787 cockpit.
