Hostilities flare along Israeli-Gaza border

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel pressed Hamas on Wednesday to rein in rocket-firing militants in the Gaza Strip after the most serious outbreak of cross-border hostilities since the ceasefire that ended an eight-day war in November.

The flare-up, sparked by anger in Gaza over the death from cancer of a Palestinian held by Israel, included Israel's first air strike on the Hamas-run coastal enclave since the truce.

Confrontations spread to the occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces clashed with dozens of Palestinian protesters in the city of Hebron, where Maysara Abu Hamdeya who died in jail on Tuesday aged 64, is due to be buried on Thursday.

Troops fired teargas and rubber bullets at youths throwing stones and petrol bombs; Reuters journalists saw several protesters escorted away with injuries. The Israeli military said a rock had also struck one of its officers in the face.

Some 4,600 Palestinian prisoners declared a hunger strike for three days in protest at Abu Hamdeya's death, accusing the authorities of poor medical treatment. Food trays were returned untouched on Wednesday, an Israeli prisons official said.

In West Bank towns, some shops were shuttered in solidarity.

The Gaza frontier fell quiet by evening and Israel and Hamas appeared to be weighing carefully their next moves; four months of relative calm has enabled Palestinians in Gaza to rebuild and Israelis near the border to live without sirens and rockets.

Two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip had struck southern Israel in a morning attack on Wednesday, causing no casualties, the Israeli military said. Hours earlier its planes had targeted "two extensive terror sites" in the north of the territory.

Israel launched the air strike after three rockets landed on Tuesday. An al Qaeda-linked group, Magles Shoura al-Mujahadeen, claimed responsibility for the attacks on both days, saying it was responding to the death of Abu Hamdeya, who was jailed for life in 2002 over a planned bomb attack on a Jerusalem cafe.

Tuesday was the third time since the November truce that rockets from Gaza had struck southern Israel. But with a new government and defense minister now in place after weeks of coalition-building since a January election, Israel seems keen to show resolve, putting the onus on Hamas to curb militants.

"(Israel's armed forces) decided to attack overnight in order to signal to Hamas that we will not suffer any strike on the south. And any shooting will meet a response, in order to restore quiet for the south soon," Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai, the chief military spokesman, said on Army Radio.

"I assess that Hamas has no interest in seeing the situation deteriorate," he said. "Our goal is to maintain the quiet."

SYRIA SPILLOVER

Spillover from the civil war in Syria - mortar and machinegun fire toward Israeli troops in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights - has also heightened Israeli unease.

"We will absolutely not allow any sporadic fire toward our citizens and our forces," Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said in a statement, referring to both Gaza and Syrian frontiers.

Israeli tanks fired at a Syrian post on Tuesday, though it was unclear whether rebel or government forces were manning it.

Hamas, an Islamist group close to the Muslim Brotherhood now ruling neighboring Egypt, has cracked down on hardline Salafist rivals it sees as jeopardizing its control of the Gaza Strip.

But the death of Abu Hamdeya has touched a nerve among the wider Palestinian populace, which regards those in Israeli jails as heroes in the fight for statehood.

Israel has denied negligence in his treatment.

Commenting on the violence in Gaza, Richard Serry, the U.N.'s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said it was of "paramount importance to refrain from violence".

He said in a statement that renewed violations of the ceasefire threatened to unravel Egyptian-brokered understandings that included an easing of Israel's blockade on the enclave.

Egypt mediated the November truce after fighting in which some 170 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed. Israel had launched that Gaza offensive, as it did a bigger campaign in 2008-09, with the declared aim of ending rocket fire.

Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement in 2007 after winning an election a year earlier. Palestinians want to establish a state in the enclave along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in a 1967 war.

Exhaled breath carries a molecular 'breathprint' unique to each individual

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Stable, specific 'breathprints' unique to an individual exist and may have applications as diagnostic tools in personalized medicine. Bodily fluids contain lots of information about the health status of a person. Medical doctors routinely have blood and urine analysed in order to obtain hints for infectious and metabolic diseases, to diagnose cancer and organ failure, and to check the dose of medication, based on compounds present in these body fluids.

Researchers at ETH Zurich and at the University Hospital Zurich now propose to extend such analyses to breath, and in particular to take advantage of modern high-resolution analytical methods that can provide real-time information on the chemical composition of exhaled breath.

Unbiased Chemical Analysis of Breath

The scientists developed an instrument-based version of a principle that has been known for a long time in traditional Chinese medicine: TCM doctors draw conclusions about the health state of a patient based on the smell of the exhaled breath. It is also known that trained dogs and rats can distinguish the smell of the breath of people suffering from certain variants of cancer. In these cases the entire smell of the patient's exhaled breath is gauged, which can give rise to bias. The scientists, led by Renato Zenobi, professor at the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry, aim at eliminating this bias and identifying the chemical compounds in breath. Like this, doctors should be able to use specific compounds, which are present in breath at minute concentrations, for medical diagnosis.

Using mass spectrometry, these goals can be reached, as shown in a recent study where the ETH researchers analysed the exhaled breath of eleven volunteers. They found that the chemical "fingerprint" of exhaled breath, largely based on volatile and semi-volatile metabolites, shows an individual core pattern. Each volunteer was found to have his/her own characteristic "breathprint."

Stable Pattern

Using regular measurements extending over 11 days, the researchers could furthermore show that this metabolic "breathprint" stays constant. "We did find some small variations during the day, but overall the individual pattern stays sufficiently constant to be useful for medical purposes," says Pablo Martinez-Lozano Sinues, senior scientist in Zenobi's research group. If the measurements would show too large variations, they would not be useful for medical diagnosis.

To carry out these measurements, Zenobi and his colleagues modified commercial mass spectrometers, for example by adding a breath sampling inlet line that delivers exhaled breath from a mouth piece directly into the ion source of the instrument. Mass spectra showing peaks of roughly 100 compounds in breath can be easily and rapidly obtained in this fashion. The researchers were able to identify acetone, a product of the sugar metabolism. Most of the other signals present in the "breathprints" have not been assigned yet, which is something the scientists have on their to-do-list.

Chemical fingerprints of diseases

The next step the ETH chemists plan to take is not only to elucidate the personal breathprints of individuals, but to recognize characteristic patterns of diseases with the same technology. For this endeavour, they are collaborating with medical doctors at the Division of Pulmonology of the University Hospital Zurich. "If we find a consistent pattern in patients with a given lung disease, we can develop a diagnostic tool," explains Sinues. They believe that their chances are highest to find characteristic biomarkers in the exhaled breath of patients with lung diseases, which is why they focus on these disorders. In the future, they hope to extend their methodology to other groups of diseases.

Although the potential usefulness of analysing breath for medical diagnosis has been known, it is rarely done in academic medicine. "This might be due to the fact that existing methods for breath analysis are either rather slow, or are limited to a small number of compounds that they can detect," says Sinues.

Compared to analysis of blood or urine, a significant advantage of the approach the ETH researchers have taken is that the breath fingerprint is available within seconds after delivering the breath sample. Analysing urine or blood in a specialized laboratory usually takes a lot longer. Another advantage is that exhaling into the ion source of a mass spectrometer is completely non-invasive, i.e., there is no need to poke the patient with a needle (when a blood sample is taken). "Our goal is to develop breath analysis to the point where it becomes competitive with the established analysis of blood and urine," says Malcolm Kohler, professor at the University Hospital Zurich, and one of the co-authors of the study. Regular survey of breath could, for example, be used to obtain an early warning for healthy persons with a known risk for a certain disease. It is also imaginable to monitor the progress or the side effects of an on-going medical therapy.

For this method to be accepted in the clinic, the instrumentation has to be improved. The highly sensitive and accurate mass spectrometers that are currently used for these analyses are large and expensive. Zenobi: "Small, portable mass spectrometers already exist; if their performance can be improved, they will eventually find their way into clinics and doctor's offices."

The mountain ranges of the North American Cordillera are made up of dozens of distinct crustal blocks. A new study clarifies their mode of origin and identifies a previously unknown oceanic plate that contributed to their assembly.

The extensive area of elevated topography that dominates the Western reaches of North America is exceptionally broad, encompassing the coastal ranges, the Rocky Mountains and the high plateaus in between. In fact, this mountain belt consists of dozens of crustal blocks of varying age and origin, which have been welded onto the American continent over the past 200 million years. "How these blocks arrived in North America has long been a puzzle," says LMU geophysicist Karin Sigloch, who has now taken a closer look at the problem, in collaboration with the Canadian geologist Mitchell Mihalynuk.

Collisions and continental growth

One popular model for the accretion process postulates that a huge oceanic plate the Farallon Plate acted as a conveyor belt to sweep crustal fragments eastwards to the margin of American Plate, to which they were attached as the denser Farallon Plate was subducted under it. However, this scenario is at variance with several geological findings, and does not explain why the same phenomenon is not observed on the west coast of South America, the classical case of subduction of oceanic crust beneath a continental plate. The precise source of the crustal blocks themselves has also remained enigmatic, although geological studies suggest that they derive from several groups of volcanic islands. "The geological strata in North America have been highly deformed over the course of time, and are extremely difficult to interpret, so these findings have not been followed up," says Sigloch.

Sigloch and Mihalynuk have now succeeded in assembling a comprehensive picture of the accretion process by incorporating geophysical findings obtained by seismic tomography. This technique makes it possible to probe the geophysical structure of the Earth's interior down to the level of the lower mantle by analyzing the propagation velocities of seismic waves. The method can image the remnants of ancient tectonic plates at great depths, ocean floor that subducted, i.e., disappeared from the surface and sank back into the mantle, long time ago.

Intra-oceanic subduction of the Farallon Plate

Most surprisingly, the new data suggest that the Farallon Plate was far smaller than had been assumed, and underwent subduction well to the west of what was then the continental margin of North America. Instead it collided with, and subducted under, an intervening and previously unrecognized oceanic plate. Sigloch and Mihalynuk were able to locate the remnants of several deep-sea trenches that mark subduction sites at which oceanic plates plunge at a steep angle into the mantle and are drawn almost vertically into its depths. "The volcanic activity that accompanies the subduction process will have generated lots of new crustal material, which emerged in the form of island arcs along the line of the trenches, and provided the material for the crustal blocks," Sigloch explains.

As these events were going on, the American Plate was advancing steadily westwards, as indicated by striped patterns of magnetized seafloor in the North Atlantic. The first to get consumed was the previously unknown oceanic plate, which can be detected seismologically beneath today's east coast of North America. Only then did the continent begin to encounter the Farallon plate. On its westward journey, North America overrode one intervening island arc after another annexing ever more of them for the construction of its wide mountains of the West.

Android App Video Review: God of Blades

Every so often, a game is released that, good or bad, is unforgettable for one reason or another. God of Blades is just such a title. Developed by White Whale Games, this game seamlessly blends auto-running and hack and slash combat with a bizarre and unique sci-fi fantasy world that pays homage to the 70's pulp fiction of yesteryear to deliver something truly memorable. Luckily, it also happens to be really freaking good.

You are the Nameless King. Your spirit stirred to life once again in the wake of your people's suffering. Your memory is incomplete, but one thing is certain. You must raise your sword yet again against the savage and barbaric void cultists and their dark magicks to defend your people. That's pretty much the set up. What follows is a hard to follow but extremely well worded plot in a unique world with plenty of cool terminology that just drips from your tongue as you say it.

Gameplay involves you swiping in up, down, left, and right, to use three different kinds of attacks and a parry as you automatically run straight into enemy after enemy? after enemy. The game is a bit repetitive, but it's also a joy to learn the proper timing of each attack and how different enemies need to be handled. Swiping up results in an upwards slash that can knock defeated foes into your next opponent, and the parry is essential to winning battles against the formidable Slayers and other VoidChosen Heroes that you'll be cutting down. Like Tarsus the Accursed. Heavens was he annoying.

As you play through the story and enjoy the superb audio design and synth based score, you'll level up your memories, so to speak. When you gain new memory points, you can spend them to unlock other legendary swords, such as the Starwind or Voidcleaver, each with their own snippets of back story that make this world feel even larger and more fleshed out than the narrative already did. Each sword also holds its own unique power that you can activate in a bind, though they'll need to recharge after each use. These include screen clearing black holes to extreme damage boosts. Seriously though, make sure you use the starting sword against Tarsus the Accursed. Don't make the same mistake I did for so many tries. It makes him as threatening as a kitten.

The aesthetic of this game seems to draw inspiration from everything pulp fantasy ever created, whether we're talking movies, fantasy novel and comic book covers, and progressive rock album covers. There's also an endless mode with a God of Blades twist, and a cool metagame called Loreseeker that has you going to actual libraries to unlock new weapons, powered by Foursquare! Now, I don't know if it's just the game or my Motorola Xoom, but it seemed to have trouble registering my swipes from time to time, which was frustrating. Still, even with that frustration, and even with the repetitious nature of the game, I loved every second I spent in this lovingly crafted universe. The "Rule of Cool" is in full effect here, and I say that with full sincerity. There are flaws in the gameplay to be sure, but they are minor, and totally worth enduring to experience all the excellence. God of Blades is available for three dollars at the time of this review. Don't skip it.

Armed teachers? NRA task force suggests voluntary program

A task force on school safety commissioned by the National Rifle Association raised the prospect Tuesday of arming school personnel ? including teachers ? after they have gone through comprehensive training.

Such a program would be voluntary, but could be crucial to halting an ?active shooter? in a school and could save lives, said former Congressman Asa Hutchinson, director of the NRA's National School Shield Task Force.

?The key is reducing that response time,? said Mr. Hutchinson, speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club, where he unveiled a series of recommendations by the task force.

The ?model training programs? the report recommends would be available to both ?school resource officers? ? police officers assigned to a school ? and to school personnel, and would entail 40 to 60 hours of training.

The report?s release comes amid fierce debate on Capitol Hill over proposed federal gun legislation almost four months after the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre that jump-started national debate on firearms. President Obama heads to Colorado on Wednesday to call attention to new gun control measures enacted by that state, scene of two of the biggest mass shootings in US history.

Next Monday, the president goes to Connecticut for another event focused on guns.

The prospects for federal legislation remain uncertain, as gun-friendly legislators appear to have beaten back efforts to renew a ban on military-style assault weapons, such as the one used by the Newtown shooter. A proposed ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines is also on the ropes. Now, analysts say, gun control advocates? best hope may be for expanded background checks for gun buyers. The legislation also includes money devoted to school safety.

Hutchinson largely avoided discussing the federal legislative battle, instead focusing on measures that schools can take now to assess security and make improvements. He also presented a more congenial pro-gun face to the public, compared with NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre?s memorable appearance before reporters soon after Newtown.

Then, Mr. LaPierre struck an aggressive posture toward the media, taking no questions, and offering no hint of compromise on any aspect of gun ownership.

?The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,? he said.

Hutchinson, in contrast, was less absolute. On Tuesday, for example, he made clear that the task force was not recommending that all teachers be armed.

?Teachers should teach,? said Hutchinson, former administrator of the US Drug Enforcement Administration. ?But if there is [one with] good experience, that has an interest in it and is willing to go through this training of, again, 40 to 60 hours that is totally comprehensive, then that is an appropriate resource that a school should be able to utilize.?

Hutchinson also made clear that while the task force recommends the presence of armed personnel in schools, each school district will decide what it wants to do.

?We want to make sure that our best practices and our resources are available to them, whatever decision that they make,? he said.

The report also recommends that the National School Shield become an umbrella organization on school safety, providing free access to a web-based assessment of a school?s security plan and to a database of best practices. The NRA has budgeted more than $1 million to aid school districts in their efforts to enhance security.

States would need to change laws to allow school personnel to carry firearms while they go through the model training program, he said. The report includes a model state law, and South Dakota recently passed such a law.

In Connecticut, home of the Newtown massacre, state legislation is moving in the opposition direction. On Wednesday, the state?s General Assembly will take up gun-control legislation that would expand the state?s ban on assault weapons, limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, and require background checks for all gun purchases, including those at gun shows.

Hutchinson called the Connecticut legislation ?totally inadequate? as a measure aimed at enhancing school safety.

?You can address assault weapons and it doesn't stop someone bringing in a .45 caliber firearm into the school,? he said. ?It doesn't stop violence in the schools. And so if you're going to protect children, you have to do something about school safety and enhancing our safety measures in school. It can be done, and that's the whole purpose of this task force.?

Hutchinson did not present a total cost figure for the task force?s proposals, noting for example that in one jurisdiction an armed guard might cost $60,000 to $90,000, while in California, the cost tops $100,000. Another member of the task force said that the cost of providing the 40 to 60 hours of firearms training to school resource officers and school personnel would cost between $800 and $1,000.

The task force did not address the specifics of how many armed personnel would be required to secure a school, based on the configuration of a school building or buildings, or the number of students. Doors are also important ? how many there are, how they lock. Recess and other times when students might be outside present another vulnerability. On all of the above, each school district would have to make its own determination, Hutchinson said.

?Obviously, an SRO [school resource officer] in every school building is important,? he said. ?But right now you have SROs rotating maybe between three campuses. I would judge that insufficient.?

The Democratic chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force took issue with the NRA task force proposal. Rep. Mike Thompson (D) of California, a hunter and gun owner, called school safety efforts important, but added that "arming school personnel and training them for shootouts will only exacerbate problems."

Argo meets TV's Mad Men in No, an engaging, Oscar-nominated political thriller from Chilean director Pablo Larrain. No tells the fictionalized story of Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), an advertising man in 1988 Chile who uses techniques borrowed from American TV to power an election campaign that would topple dictator Augusto Pinochet's 15-year reign ? but only if he can persuade a reluctant and fearful electorate to vote "no" in a referendum called solely to placate Pinochet's international critics. Rene is a composite of real people who worked on the campaign, but the larger story at the center of No is true. Both the movie's suspense and its David-and-Goliath appeal are taken straight from the pages of history.

??As No begins, Rene seems little more than a younger, hipper version of Mad Men's Don Draper, enjoying his personal success despite the squalor that surrounds him in Santiago. He's completely comfortable with the modern ad techniques he recently acquired to sell soft drinks. After a family friend running the campaign against Pinochet convinces Rene to join the effort, he meets resistance to his ideas ? which involve a "happy," lifestyle-centered TV campaign, complete with a catchy jingle ? from a coalition of political groups interested mainly in making a public statement against the dictator. Rene wants to win the referendum, despite the long odds and a strong possibility that the fix is on, and he may be the only one with a notion of how to do it.

??Like Argo, No is hell-bent on recreating a bygone era on film. But where Ben Affleck's movie relies on costumes and set design to heighten its 1970s aesthetic, No goes straight to the source. Larrain shot No on Sony U-matic video, a low-resolution professional format introduced in 1971 and still used by Chilean news crews in 1988. It's a bit of shock to see vintage color-ringing on the film's opening logos and the smeared and dingy images featured throughout ? especially in a modern and fully digital theater. But No's visuals deliver a real sense of time and place while allowing for seamless integration with archival footage from the era.

??Tales of media manipulation always seem to resonate well in the present era, whether involving the advertising industry, the so-called 24-hour news networks or the manufactured truth of reality TV. That's how No quietly connects to the world of today. In a climactic scene, it becomes clear that once you introduce the power to manipulate ? even for a righteous cause ? it's never going away. Though unspoken, No's final message is straightforward: Be careful what you wish for, especially regarding the unstoppable influence of mass media. ? KEN KORMAN
