Rain in ninth halts Phils-Reds game tied at 0

CINCINNATI -- Before batting practice Tuesday night, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel talked about his team?s struggling offense.

He tried to be diplomatic, but it didn?t work.

So he resorted to some plain talk.

?When you cut right to the chase and through the BS, we have to hit,? he said.

It didn?t happen Tuesday night. The Phillies ran into a formidable pitcher in Cincinnati?s Homer Bailey, who allowed just two singles and struck out 10 over eight shutout innings.

The Phils, meanwhile, received a strong start of their own from Kyle Kendrick, who pitched two-hit ball over seven shutout innings.

So which team finally cracked through and won the game?

Neither.

With the score knotted at 0-0, the game was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the ninth inning. It will be resumed Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. before the teams? regularly scheduled game starts at 7:10 p.m.

Tuesday night?s game was delayed one hour, 20 minutes at the start. After it was suspended, Manuel sat in the visiting manager?s office and was reminded of his pregame thoughts on the offense.

?It didn?t work out,? he said. ?We haven?t hit on this road trip. We scored six runs in three games in Miami, two last night, and right now we?re hanging on a zero.?

This is the first time the Phils have had a suspended game since their World Series clincher in 2008.

When the game resumes Wednesday night, reliever Phillippe Aumont will be on the mound to start the bottom of the ninth. Zack Cosart is the scheduled Reds? hitter. Aumont had just entered the game when the skies opened.

The Phillies wasted a strong from Kendrick, but Bailey had something to do with the their struggles at the plate.

?KK was matching him,? Manuel said. ?They didn?t hit him either.?

Phillies starting pitchers have delivered seven quality starts (six or more innings, three or fewer earned runs) in a row.

?That?s good,? Manuel said. ?But at the same time, we need to get them some runs.?

Chase Utley and Michael Young had the Phillies? only hits Tuesday night. Leadoff man Ben Revere was 0 for 4. His average has dropped to .207. Jimmy Rollins was 0 for 3. He is 0 for 15 on the trip and is down to .226.

After Bailey exited, Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the top of the ninth. In all, Phillies hitters struck out 12 times.

The Reds had a couple early threats in the game. They put runners on the corners in the first inning, but Kendrick struck out Jay Bruce to get out of the jam. Two innings later, rightfielder Laynce Nix made a diving grab of Joey Votto?s sinking liner to save a run.

Aumont is scheduled to face Cozart, Votto and Brandon Phillipps in the bottom of the ninth. They are the Reds? Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters.

John Lannan (0-0, 3.86) and Mike Leake (0-0, 6.00) are the pitchers in the regularly scheduled game.

Trendnet AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router (TEW-812DRU)


Trendnet just raised the bar for draft 802.11ac routers. The AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router (TEW-812DRU) cranked out throughput the likes of which we have never seen before. This router delivers to the market the increased speed and range that 802.11ac is all about. Excellent throughput, excellent range, and improvements in features and design since I last took a look at a Trendnet router all make this a superb piece of home networking equipment.

Design and Specs
The first thing you'll notice about the TEW-812DRU is it's a fat router, measuring 1.9 by 6.1 by 7.1 inches (HWL). It's width is notable, when compared with other modern routers, which tend to be trending towards the sleek side.

I did notice the TEW-812DRU I tested did not come with a stand. The LEDs on the front panel are positioned vertically, indicating the router is meant to operate upright. Without a stand, this chunky router is a bit wobbly when vertical?more so with cables attached.

On the rear panel are four Gigabit LAN ports and a WAN port, a WPS button, and a USB 2.0 port. The front LEDs represent the status of your USB connection, WPS, LAN, WAN, and wireless activity.

Internal components include Broadcom's BCM4360 for the 5GHz band, which is a 1.3Gbps 802.11AC, 3x3 wireless radio. For the 2.4 GHz band, there's a BCM4331 450Mbps 802.11n dual-band 3x3 wireless radio; a BCM4706 (600 MHz MIPS32 74K superscalar CPU with gigabit MAC (which supports high-speed I/O interfaces, including DDR2 and PCIe), and a BCM53125 Gigabit Switch.

Setup
Trendnet's router ships with a DVD that includes the user guide and a quick install guide. I set the device up based on the guide's directions.

To set up, you connect the WAN /Internet connection to the router's WAN port and then connect an Ethernet cable to one of the router's LAN ports and the Ethernet port to a computer you'd use for setup. This set up method bucks the tradition of most current routers on the market, where setup is wireless. I prefer Trendnet's wired method, because you are only dealing with any issues related to the setup process?and not wireless issues, too.

After the cables are connected, you power the device up and wait for the LEDs to light. When the router is fully booted up, the power LED turns green, the WAN LED blinks green, and the wireless LED lights up blue.

When I last tested a Trendnet router, the 450 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router (TEW-692GR), I found it counterintuitive that router's LAN LEDs lit red with a successful connection. Red on networking devices typically indicates some sort of connection or communication issue. I was happy to see no red LEDs on the TEW-812DRU.

Once the LEDs are lit, it's just a matter of firing up a browser and typing in the IP address of the router as the URL. This opens the setup wizard and management interface.

The installation guide instructs you to go through the Internet setup wizard first. Now, the router already had a successful connection to my Internet service. I could already browse the Web before even accessing the setup wizard.?

The Internet setup wizard directs you to select your type of Internet connection: Static, PPTP, DHCP, and so on. Most home users will select DHCP as the guide correctly states. I selected DHCP and then clicked to apply settings. I saw a progress bar that moved very quickly as settings were saved and the router was all set up in minutes.

Features
The TEW-812DRU has many of the same features as the TEW-692GR. One feature is support for up to four SSIDs on each radio band. The router supports DMZ, virtual servers (a form of port forwarding differing from actual port forwarding in that virtual server can accept public ports and private ports to be different for forwarding), WMM QOS, and access control.

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is also supported. This features sets up a wireless backbone across multiple access points in a wireless network. WDS is not to be confused with WPS, which is also supported. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) connects devices to the router when you push a WPS button on both the router and the device, or by entering a PIN number on the device.

There is a feature in the TEW-812DRU from other 802.11ac routers I've tested: its? wireless mode. Other 802.11ac routers allow you to set 5Ghz in 11ac or 802.11b/g/n or 11ac/a modes, or some combination like that. With Trendnet's router, you can set the channel width (20, 40, or 80MHz) and the MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme). The MCS allows you to set each band's data rate. By default, the MCS for both 2.4 and 5GHz is set to Auto. I would recommend leaving that setting, because the performance the router kicked out was astounding.

The only issue I took note of in the interface was a little sluggishness as I moved among interface screens. Still, that bit of pokiness does not take much away from a well-designed UI loaded with features.

Performance
The TEW-812DRU's throughput at 5GHz with the router set at WPA2-PSK with AES encryption and channel width set to 80MHz is the fastest throughput we've seen in testing consumer routers. I average throughout tested three times, and one of those times the Trendnet router's throughout hit over 300 Mbps?incredible results in my challenging testbed. Previously, the fastest router tested was the Edimax AC1200 Wireless Concurrent Dual-Band Gigabit Router, hitting 197 Mbps at one point in testing. This amazing speed was obtained by using Edimax's AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter, a USB 3.0 11ac adapter.

I still received very good throughput with my laptop's Intel Centrino 3x3 adapter but not as fast as with the Edimax adapter. For example, with the Intel adapter, the Trendnet router managed 100 Mbps in 2.4GHz mode?only slightly exceeded by the Netgear Dual Band 11ac Wireless Router R6300, which reached 138 mbps.

Not only did the TEW-812DRU deliver great speed, but it sustained throughput as I moved further away from the device. Click on the image to review performance results and comparisons.

Top 11ac Router
So far, the TEW-812DRU is the best 11ac router I've tested. There are many other really good routers for 802.11ac out there?theBuffalo AirStation AC1300/N900 Gigabit Dual Band WZR-D1800H and the Cisco Linksys Smart Wi-Fi AC 1750HD Video Pro EA6500, to name two. However, 11ac is all about speed, and Trendnet killed in my testing. Demanding tasks like streaming high-def video in a home network would be ideal with the TEW-812DRU. With a very good feature set, IPv6 support and the ability to connect USB devices, this router gets an easy 4.5 out of 5 stars and PCMag's Editors' Choice for 802.11ac home routers.

Photons run out of loopholes: Quantum world really is in conflict with our everyday experience

Apr. 15, 2013 ? A team led by the Austrian physicist Anton Zeilinger has now carried out an experiment with photons in which they have closed an important loophole. The researchers have thus provided the most complete experimental proof that the quantum world is in conflict with our everyday experience.

The results of this study appear this week in the journal Nature (Advance Online Publication/AOP).

When we observe an object, we make a number of intuitive assumptions, among them that the unique properties of the object have been determined prior to the observation and that these properties are independent of the state of other, distant objects. In everyday life, these assumptions are fully justified, but things are different at the quantum level. In the past 30 years, a number of experiments have shown that the behaviour of quantum particles -- such as atoms, electrons or photons -- can be in conflict with our basic intuition. However, these experiments have never delivered definite answers. Each previous experiment has left open the possibility, at least in principle, that the observed particles 'exploited' a weakness of the experimental setup.

Quantum physics is an exquisitely precise tool for understanding the world around us at a very fundamental level. At the same time, it is a basis for modern technology: semiconductors (and therefore computers), lasers, MRI scanners, and numerous other devices are based on quantum-physical effects. However, even after more than a century of intensive research, fundamental aspects of quantum theory are not yet fully understood. On a regular basis, laboratories worldwide report results that seem at odds with our everyday intuition but that can be explained within the framework of quantum theory.

On the trail of the quantum entanglement mystery

The physicists in Vienna report not a new effect, but a deep investigation into one of the most fundamental phenomena of quantum physics, known as 'entanglement.' The effect of quantum entanglement is amazing: when measuring a quantum object that has an entangled partner, the state of the one particle depends on measurements performed on the partner. Quantum theory describes entanglement as independent of any physical separation between the particles. That is, entanglement should also be observed when the two particles are sufficiently far apart from each other that, even in principle, no information can be exchanged between them (the speed of communication is fundamentally limited by the speed of light). Testing such predictions regarding the correlations between entangled quantum particles is, however, a major experimental challenge.

Towards a definitive answer

The young academics in Anton Zeilinger's group including Marissa Giustina, Alexandra Mech, Rupert Ursin, Sven Ramelow and Bernhard Wittmann, in an international collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology/NIST (USA), the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (Germany), and the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics (Germany), have now achieved an important step towards delivering definitive experimental evidence that quantum particles can indeed do things that classical physics does not allow them to do. For their experiment, the team built one of the best sources for entangled photon pairs worldwide and employed highly efficient photon detectors designed by experts at NIST. These technological advances together with a suitable measurement protocol enabled the researchers to detect entangled photons with unprecedented efficiency. In a nutshell: "Our photons can no longer duck out of being measured," says Zeilinger.

This kind of tight monitoring is important as it closes an important loophole. In previous experiments on photons, there has always been the possibility that although the measured photons do violate the laws of classical physics, such non-classical behaviour would not have been observed if all photons involved in the experiment could have been measured. In the new experiment, this loophole is now closed. "Perhaps the greatest weakness of photons as a platform for quantum experiments is their vulnerability to loss -- but we have just demonstrated that this weakness need not be prohibitive," explains Marissa Giustina, lead author of the paper.

Now one last step

Although the new experiment makes photons the first quantum particles for which, in several separate experiments, every possible loophole has been closed, the grand finale is yet to come, namely, a single experiment in which the photons are deprived of all possibilities of displaying their counterintuitive behaviour through means of classical physics. Such an experiment would also be of fundamental significance for an important practical application: 'quantum cryptography,' which relies on quantum mechanical principles and is considered to be absolutely secure against eavesdropping. Eavesdropping is still theoretically possible, however, as long as there are loopholes. Only when all of these are closed is a completely secure exchange of messages possible.

An experiment without any loopholes, says Zeilinger, "is a big challenge, which attracts groups worldwide." These experiments are not limited to photons, but also involve atoms, electrons, and other systems that display quantum mechanical behaviour. The experiment of the Austrian physicists highlights the photons' potential. Thanks to these latest advances, the photon is running out of places to hide, and quantum physicists are closer than ever to conclusive experimental proof that quantum physics defies our intuition and everyday experience to the degree suggested by research of the past decades.
