After flirting with the idea of allowing free short-term camping for self-contained caravans, campervans and motorhomes, Esperance Shire Council has decided not to pursue the plan.

The Western Australian town ? a long-time favourite with grey nomads ? was initially keen to follow the example of other regional towns such as Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Lenora in offering free short-term camping..

The proposal was put forward by Robert Hicks, chair of the Goldfields-Esperance Tourism Alliance who suggested a broader regional approach would attract more grey nomads and other travellers. However, councillors eventually felt unable to endorse a free camping area for self-contained RVs ? much to the delight of local van park owners.

?There is absolutely no advantage in providing free parking for RVs in town,? the owner of the Esperance Seafront Caravan Park, John D?Emden, told the Esperance Express.

Esperance Bay Holiday Park manager Nigel Gardam agreed, saying the provision of free RV parking would have been disastrous for local tourism parks.
?It would affect our occupancy rates and our livelihoods,? Mr Gardam told the local paper. ?I?m glad that council decided not to go down that road.?
