Baby Shower distant from family

Are you planning on being back in NH any time soon? For the holidays? If you think that your family and friends in NH would want to be involved in a shower of some kind, do you think--if you were back in NH--they would throw you a shower? There is no rule saying you can only have one shower.

We live in NC, but are traveling back up to MD and onto MA--where all our family and friends are--at Christmas time. I know my aunt in MD is throwing us a shower for all our MD family and friends when we are traveling through MD around Christmas time. I was going to invite my family (MH's aunts, and female cousins) in MA to the MD shower, just to include them, but that got subtly squashed because I'm pretty sure there is already something in the works for our family in MA...

If traveling back to NH is not a possibility, I'd try to find a way to gauge your family on what you think is appropriate. In my case, I'd probably just send invites to family (immediate, aunts, cousins) and some limited, very close friends--basically people who would easily understand from your invite that you aren't being gift grabby, but just want them to be involved.
