Healthy Homes: How to Renovate Your House in a Green Way ...

Most people today want to help save our planet but don?t really know what steps they can take to help. Below are some great ways you can renovate your house in a green way and be more environmentally friendly.

Light Bulbs

Today, there?s not really a good reason you shouldn?t be using CFL light bulbs. Always shutting the lights off is good, but you should also be sure you change your lights to the CFL (compact fluorescent bulb). Not only do they last a lot longer than regular light bulbs, but they are a good bit more efficient and will save you lots on electricity. Always remember that light bulbs once used should be recycled. You can go to home improvement stores for recycling centers.

Unplug Appliances

You should always unplug the appliances and products in your home if they are not being used. Leaving them in all day long can really be costly to your pocketbook and the environment as well. If you want to do this in a simple manner, you can make some plug socket strips. This way, you can plug various appliances into one socket and turn them off at one time with the flip of a switch. This is far easier and can be habit forming.

Sealing Cracks

Always keep cracks sealed to prevent drafts coming into your home. If you do this, you won?t lose the cool air in your home in the summer months or the warm air in the winter months. You won?t have to run a humidifier because of dampness because none will be seeping in through cracks. Sealing all your cracks will also prevent mold from coming inside the home. Many people invest in using a swamp cooler which is very energy efficient and can keep a home cool.

Water Consumption

Reducing your water use is a good way to go green. Lowering the levels of water use can be done in a few different ways. Taking shorter showers and filling the bath up not quite so high is just a couple of ways. The shower heads can be changed out to have ones with aerators and slow flow water releases. Adding a low flow to the washer, dishwasher and sinks will help save a lot of money. You can attach nozzles on the hose outdoors that will stop water from flowing continuously. Watering plants in the morning before the sun is out for the day will allow them to soak up the water before it gets evaporated.

Cleaners

Always use the household cleaners that are friendly for the environment. There are far too many harsh chemicals being used in the home when there are plenty of environmentally safe ones to use. Using natural sprays in the home will not only benefit the home, but allergy sufferers as well. Disposable wipes are normally made with much more natural products as well. You can find washing powders and cleaning products made from naturally ingredients at most stores today.

These are just a few tips you can use to help the environment and go green!
