Wii U in Top Five Gifts Desired by Children and Teens

A report over at Nielsen based on surveys of American kids and teenagers has found that the new Wii U has made its way to the top of Christmas lists for that age group, featuring in the top five desired products for both six- to twelve-year-olds and those aged thirteen and older. Of course, the Wii U is nestled in among a whole lot of Apple products too, and the iPad beats it to the top of each list.

For those aged six to twelve, iPad is desired by 48%, the Wii U by 39%, the iPad Touch and iPad Mini by 36% each, and the iPhone by 33%. Given that those Apple figures add up to more than 100%, it looks like some kids want multiple iProducts this Christmas.

The results for those over thirteen are a little less strong. Only 21% want iPads, but it's still top of the list, followed by 19% for a computer, 18% for a tablet computer other than an iPad, 17% for the Wii U, and 14% for iPhone. Presumably a lot of those teens already have iPhones.

While Apple products still reign supreme in both groups, it's interesting to see that Nintendo can still attract a large percentage of its target audience. It'll be even more interesting to see if the supply can keep up with the demand, or if we'll have a repeat of the Wii situation of a few years ago. Anyone think Nintendo is holding back stock to increase the appearance of overwhelming demand? Or do you think these figures show that the demand is real?
